Linux on Acer Aspire 4520 Install Guide
On The Transition To Linux
I used to be a Windows user for as long as I can remember.
But for the past 6 months I tried using linux, thx to my friend Gesang and his provocative act influencing me to switch to linux.
Now I am using Backtrack 4 R1 (Ubuntu 8.10), a penetration testing distribution. I use the distro because I need the pentest capability to test the applications I created. So after about 6 months on Linux, I decided on switching my main O/S to Linux and leaving my Windows XP SP2 as an alernative. I don't know. Give me a couple of months and perhaps I'll run Windows on a VM.
Now let,s get to the real point why I wrote this post in the first place.
When I switched, the main problem was that most of the stuffs in my laptop is not all directly included in the distribution. Thus, I have to search all over the web for the required resources.
This post will sum up where you'll have to download all the stuffs.
Graphic Driver
No, the graphic driver is not included in the box.
All you need to do is go to the driver download page to download the graphic driver for GeForce 700M. From console simple run the script and restart the x-server. The XORG configuration will be configured by the script.
Sound Driver
Just like the graphic driver, you'll also need to install the sound driver. All you need to do is download the latest ALSA driver here. After instalation, do not forget to change the modprobe for ALSA.
Open /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.
In the last line add:
options snd-hda-intel model=acer
after that, save and restart x. Enjoy the sound.
Webcam
Webcam doesn't come out of the box. You can download the webcam driver here. After instalation, try using cheese or skype to test. It should be working fine.
Bluetooth
It works fine out of the box.
Wi-Fi
Wireless card (Atheros) works fine out of the box.
Those are the common problems.
Hope it helps.
If you have other question, email me or follow my twitter.
Oh, and by the way, Happy New Year 2011. Hope this year becomes a successful year for all of us.
Thanks for visiting.
Warm Regards
